Today, it's with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Hazel Slocum, the founder of Slocum Realty. Hazel was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was completely dedicated to her family.
While her husband, George, had held a real estate license since he opened the insurance division in 1949, it was Hazel who took that side of our business to another level in 1977, purchasing a Century21 franchise after her children were grown.
The roll out of the franchise lined up almost simultaneously with The Blizzard of '78 which looking back on it, was a great metaphor for how entrenched she became in the industry in a short time period. Hazel became one of the leaders in the Rhode Island Broker's Advisory Council, ultimately serving as it's President.
She continued to be the driving force of our company for over twenty years through her retirement in 2000. Hazel was instrumental in helping us transition away from franchise operations and back to our independent status that we've enjoyed ever since.
She was fierce and strong-willed, which seems to be a common trait for most of the women in The Slocum Family. She fought hard for her clients, her staff, and everyone that came into her professional life. Always known to be a straight shooter, there was no beating around the bush with Hazel.
Hazel built a culture based on the fact that there's only one way to do things, the right way. Honesty and integrity, every single time. She was extremely proud to see how our company has grown over the years and we look forward to carrying forward her spirit, commitment, and drive.
Rest in Peace, Hazel. We love you.
